Google Nexus 5 Signal drop problems - Emergency calls only mode

Have you observed any Signal issues in your Google Nexus 5? It's turning out to be a very common issue in Nexus 5 and a lot of users have already requested a replacement from Google play store. The symptoms of the network issues are - randomly getting Emergency Calls Only mode, Losing GSM signal after SMS, Losing all the network signal bars twice or thrice a day.

Solution for signal drop - the Emergency calls only mode

Restarting your N5 is the easiest temporary solution, but it can be very annoying for the users. The problem has been observed for worldwide networks such as AT&T & T-Mobile in USA, Rogers and Fido in Canda, O2 and Three in UK as well as TIM in Italy. Most of the users have experienced signal drop after sending a Text SMS. SMS message gets delivered then it loses partial connection to the network. SMS and voice calls fail to function, but data are still accessible.

So far we have found a few workarounds like

1. Go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Choose automatically. This should do the trick.
2. Turning off the LTE helped few. The problem is less likely to occur in 3G devices.

This is definitely a bug in the Nexus 5 and we are hoping that Google could correct it with the next software update. The very first update for Nexus 5 couldn't resolve this problem.

Samsung S3 vs Google LG Nexus 4 - In Depth Comparison, Display, Processor, Storage and more

Samsung S3 vs Google LG Nexus 4

The galaxy S3 has been one of the most popular Android phones in the market for some time now. It has a beautiful screen, amazing specs and overall is a pretty good phone. The newest contender to the S3s throne is the recently launched Google LG Nexus 4. The newest Android flagship phone launched by Google and manufactured by LG has mind-boggling specs for a really cheap price. Does it have what it takes to replace Samsungs S3 as the popular choice?

Display

The first thing we notice about a phone is its size. When Samsung launched the S3 it was mocked for having a huge 4.8 inch screen. Most of the Android fans felt it was too large, however people soon got comfortable with its size and its now actually a major selling factor for the phone. The LG Nexus 4 sports a similar 4.7 inch screen. The Nexus 4 however has a slightly higher resolution and pixel density than the S3 (302 for S3 and 320 for S3) The Displays use separate technologies with S3 using its Super AMOLED and Nexus 4 using the IPS Plus LCD display. Both have Gorilla Glass 2 protection but the S3 will be slightly better in sunlight whereas the Nexus 4 will be sharper.

Processor and Memory

Both the Nexus 4 and the S3 devices have quad-core processors. The Galaxy S3 sports a 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 and the Nexus 4 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.5GHz. The Nexus 4 offers 2GB of RAM, which outperforms the 1GB of RAM in the European and international versions of the S3. The U.S. version of the Galaxy S3 matches the Nexus 4's 2GB of RAM however it has a dual-core instead of a quad core processor.

Storage

The Nexus 4 comes in 8GB and 16GB versions and has a huge disadvantage in the fact that it has no microSD slot and sports a Uni-body design which even though adds class takes away the removable battery. The Galaxy S3 comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB varieties and you can expand by a further 64GB using the microSD slot which you can get to by removing the back cover. The Nexus 4 might have a lot going for it but lags behind in the storage department.

Cameras

When it comes to comparing the main camera of the phones, both devices have 8-megapixel cameras that can record high definition 1080p video at 30 fps. They both have the usual LED flash, face detection, and loads of other features. Android 4.2 brings the new Photo Sphere feature for panoramas to the Nexus 4, but the Galaxy S3 camera app has some added features thanks to Samsungs bloatware. It’s easier to differentiate between the two phones on the front-facing camera because the Galaxy S3 has a 1.9-megapixel camera and the Nexus 4 has a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Battery

Both the S3 and the Nexus 4 phones have batteries rated at 2,100mAh. The Galaxy S3 battery is removable while the Nexus 4 battery isn’t which might be a big deal for some and might not for some. People who have the habit of carrying a spare battery for their phone will hate the Nexus 4 for that. We’ll need to wait for more extensive hands-on testing to see if there’s any difference in the consumption and use of the batteries but one novel feature the Nexus 4 has is that it supports wireless charging and has a nifty Wireless Charging Orb accessory, even you do have to buy it separately.

Connectivity

Both the phones have NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DLNA, and everything else you would expect to find on the latest Android phone. The widely criticized flaw is that the Nexus 4 doesn’t support 4G LTE. Im unsure how much that matters, since LTE is fully functional only in the US and probably only a couple more countries but also because HSPA+ can be very fast. But if you're buying a Nexus 4 as a long term phone, by two years LTE will have entered every major market and will be a coveted feature.

User Interface

As a Google release the Nexus 4 has a stock Android and it offers version 4.2 which contains lots of refinements over 4.1, but is still named as Jelly Bean. There’s a new Quick Settings screen, widgets on the lock screen, improvements in Google Now, Voice Search, among a few other refinements in the version 4.2. The Galaxy S3 launched with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but the Jelly Bean 4.1 update has rolled out devices already. It also has Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, which has already added some features such as a Quick Settings menu in the Notifications bar. There isn’t a huge difference in usability and the UI looks the same, but the latest version of Android is always the best as it has refinement, bug fixes etc. The 4.1 update for the Galaxy S3 brought a very noticeable improvement in speed and performance, as well as expanded Notifications and Google Now.

Additional Notes:
  • While the Nexus 4 has a faster CPU it's GPU is lacking and thus games will work better on the GS3. Even though the GS3 only has 1GB or RAM it doesn't seem to have a problem storing/retrieving from memory. That may change in the future as apps begin to use more memory space.
  • The biggest difference you will note is the GS3 screen is a bit darker in broad daylight which is a result of its AMOLED screen vs the N4's True HD IPS Plus.

Google LG Nexus 4 - Pros & Features compared to other Android phones

Google LG Nexus 4 - Pros & Advantages

Google launched three new Nexus devices on Oct 29th, The Nexus 10" tablet, a Nexus 7 with cellular option and a new Nexus phone: The LG Nexus 4. The phone as both pros and cons as with every phone but the phone seems very impressive with LG taking its turn at building a smartphone this time rather than Samsung. Here are what we think the major selling points in Google's latest offering

Also read : Cons of Google LG Nexus 4

Specs of Nexus 4

The internals of the Nexus 4 are packed to the core; coming in with 2GB of RAM as standard, a 2,100 mAh battery (10 hours talk-time), NFC for transferring files or making payments, Bluetooth, and your usual Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support. This phone blows away the competition because most phones at this price usually offer somewhere around 1GB RAM and a dual core processor if you're lucky

Display

The Nexus 4 comes with a 4.7-inch IPS LCD display with a screen resolution of 1280×768, which equates to 320 ppi. The screen might be a downer for geeks who have fallen in love with the Galaxy Nexus’ Super AMOLED HD display, but keep in mind that an IPS display panel is much more sharper and doesn’t have that grainy look to it, unlike AMOLED. And also, the display has a 16:10 ratio instead of 16:9, which makes the makes the display of the Nexus 4 wider, and not taller compared to the Galaxy Nexus.

Camera

The camera has been improved over the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 4 comes with an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Low-light performance has been given a significant boost over previous generation Nexus devices, hence you can be rest assured that the device will take more than satisfactory photos even in low-light conditions. But that’s not all, the Nexus 4 is the first device ever which allows us to take 360° panoramas!

Pricing

The Nexus 4 will be available on November 13th, the 8GB model will retail for $299 and the 16GB model for $349. There are no details on which carriers it will be available on at first.

Bonus Points

- It is a Nexus Device so we get timely updates for the latest Android instead of waiting like the OEM supported Android phones. For most Android power users this is a big deal as they get the full unadulterated version of their favorite OS.

- Even though the device offers a 16GB model (which is way too less) it supports USB on the go (USB-OTG) which means you can connect a flash drive to it with a special cable and have all your media stored on the flash.

- The pricing has been mentioned once in the post, but its almost unbelievable how cheap the phone is compared to what it offers. The phone would be right at home in the 500$ category instead it retails for a 299$ price which is a steal.

Biggest Disadvantages & Cons of Google LG Nexus 4

Biggest Disadvantages & Cons of Google LG Nexus 4

Google just launched three new Nexus devices on October 29th, one of it being the highly awaited LG Nexus 4 Smartphone. The phone is pretty competitive with its amazing specs and can hold its own in a 500$ smartphone market but the best part of it which has every Android user thrilled is that it starts at 299$.

LG takes its shot at delivering a Nexus device this time, with the Nexus 4, an Android 4.2-powered handset with a 4.7-inch 1280×768 display, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, an 8MP rear-facing camera and 8 or 16GB of internal storage. It offers has 2 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, NFC and Bluetooth built in. However, even though the phone offers its value for money, everything comes at a price and once you think about it, there has to be things that Google must have sacrificed to touch the 299$ mark. Here's what we think are the biggest disappointments in the phone.

No LTE

LTE is a big deal for the US customers. In the rest of the world it might not matter much but in the US it is a big disadvantage. Even though the phone does support HSPA+ the biggest fall is in the mind of the Android fan who mocked every iPhone 'zombie' for going with a phone not capable of supporting LTE when Android did.
Google doesn’t think LTE is ready for prime time, but we beg to differ. Optional LTE for the US market would have been great, but Google obviously did the math and concluded that it’s not worth the effort. Lack of LTE will definately be a deal breaker for many US consumers.

Storage

It is understandable that Google had to cut corners to bring down the price but a phone with 8GB is ridiculous. After the OS that leaves about 4-5GB of storage space for the user. This is a big disadvantage at a time when a single game can touch 1-1.5GB in size. The 16GB option might be okay for people who are not hooked to games and media but where is the 32GB option? It is usually the storage size most people prefer and Google doesn't offer it.

No Micro-SD slot

Let alone the fact that Google itself didn't offer many options in the storage department but the user cant use expandable memory? This is another huge con for the Nexus 4 in the pros and cons comparison of the phone with others. By itself it might not have been so bad if the other Android smartphones didn't offer this option.

The Bigger Picture

However the worst problem is usually the bigger picture. With the Nexus 4 phone, Google underhanded the OEM Android makers and showed people that a good and an affordable Android phone is possible. Effectively it made its supporters into its competitors which is never a good thing to do considering that fact that Google relies on them to gain more Android customers.

All this being said, we have to remember that at the price of 299$ more than a few people will be willing to compromise on these points but then quite a few will shift their loyalties too... especially with tempting options like HTC and Samsung. What would you as a user prefer? A Samsung or an HTC phone or the new Nexus 4 and why? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.
